What A Mother's Love Don't Teach You:A Tale of TwoMothers and Two Jamaicas. In her debut novel, What a Mother's Love Don't Teach you, Sharma Taylor brings together a diverse cast of characters: a young woman yearning to break free from the ghetto, an aspiring musician, a drug kingpin, and compromised officials, all set against the volatile political climate of 1980s Jamaica. The novel juxtaposes this gritty reality of life in the ghetto with the opulence of the wealthy in the surburbs providing a stark contrast between the haves and have-nots. As Jamaica grapples with economic collapse and political corruption, Taylor deftly illustrates how socio-economic pressures fracture communities and fuel the rise of gang culture as a desperate bid to escape poverty. The setting, the 1980s, offers a geopolitical and historical perspective on Jamaica’s challenges during this era, particularly in relation to U.S. policies and their impact. The novel addresses themes of greed, disparity, poverty, the influence of criminal syndicates, and the pervasive corruption within politics and law enforcement. In the past, it was a challenge for black children to find books featuring main characters who resembled them. Fortunately, things have changed somewhat and today’s children can now choose from a diverse array of books featuring characters of various brown shades, with whom they can identify. To celebrate International Children’s Books Day, we’ve curated a list of four enjoyable books that you can either read to your little ones or gift to those mature enough to enjoy reading in their own quiet corner. Sulwe is written by Lupita Nyong'o Lupita Nyong'oAge group 2-5Our first recommendation Sulwe is written by Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o. It is a tale of a little girl who has a darker skin tone than her family and school friends. All she wants is to be lighter, until one night she goes on a magical adventure, and her mind opens up to her natural beauty. Sulwe is especially good if you want to introduce your child to notions of self-confidence, and inner beauty.Look Up! By Nathan Bryon Nathan Bryon & Dapo Adeola Age group 3-7Look Up! is a delightful book written by Nathan Bryon and illustrated by Dapo Adeola. The story revolves around Rocket, a science-obsessed chatterbox who dreams of becoming the greatest astronaut, star-catcher, and space-traveller. She is determined to get her entire town to watch a meteor shower, much to the annoyance of her big brother who prefers to stay glued to his phone.Look Up not only full of fun facts about meteors and space. It also challenges traditional views on gender.Change Sings by Amanda Gorman Amanda Gorman & Loren Long Age Group 4-8Change Sings is a story of a young girl who she leads a cast of characters on a musical journey as she teaches them that they all have the power to make changes. This is an inspiring picture book and is a must have for all young readers.
